About National Poetry Month

National Poetry Month was launched in April 1996 by the Academy of American Poets as a way to remind the public that poets have an integral role to play in our culture and that poetry matters.

Here's a list of ways you can celebrate National Poetry Month at home and online:

  • Find online poetry readings and events through the Poetry Near You Calendar
  • Sign up for Poem-a-Day and enjoy a free daily poem in your email, poems are curated by the award-winning poet Naomi Shihab Nye
  • Follow the thousands of celebrations taking place on social media through the official hashtag #NationalPoetryMonth and follow the Academy of American Poets on Twitter and Instagram
