About Women's History Month

Since 1987, the month of March has been recognized as National Women's History Month in the United States.

A time to study and celebrate women's history, national Women's History Month began in 1978 as a Women's History Week in Sonoma County, California. The Education Task Force of the county's Commission on the Status of Women scheduled this first observance for the week of March 8, specifically to include International Women's Day.

In 1981, Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and Representative Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) introduced the Joint Congressional Resolution that turned Sonoma County's annual celebration into National Women's History Week. It was celebrated as such every March, during the week of International Women's Day. In 1986, the National Women's History Project successfully petitioned Congress to declare all of March National Women's History Month. Every year, since then, by congressional resolution and presidential proclamation, March has been Women's History Month.

2022 Women's History Month Theme

The theme for 2022 is "Women Providing Healing, Promoting Hope." The 2022 Women's History theme is "...both a tribute to the ceaseless work of caregivers and frontline workers during this ongoing pandemic and also recognition of the thousands of ways that women of all culture have provided both healing and hope throughout history." - National Women's History Alliance

Women’s History Month 2022 will take place from Tuesday, March 1-Thursday, March 31, 2022.

Agents of Social Change: Online Exhibit
This exhibit marks the opening for research of eight collections of 20th century women activists: the papers of Constance Baker Motley, Dorothy Kenyon, Mary Kaufman, Frances Fox Piven, Jessie Lloyd O'Connor, and Gloria Steinem and the records of the Women's Action Alliance and the National Congress of Neighborhood Women. These new resources highlight women's part in the multiple struggles for social change that span the century including labor, socialism, civil liberties, peace, racial justice, urban reform, welfare rights, and women's rights. They illuminate connections between reform movements, as well as the interplay of race, ethnicity, class, and gender within them. Processing of these collections was made possible in part by the generous support of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Women have contributed to America’s most defining moments—times that shaped constitutional rights, yielded scientific breakthroughs, created the symbols of our nation. Yet a diversity of women’s stories has not been widely told. To create a more equitable America, the Smithsonian is researching, disseminating, and amplifying the histories of American women through its American Women’s History Initiative in preparation for the future Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum. The Smithsonian wants the role of women in American history to be well-known, accurate, acknowledged, and empowering.
